One of the most important emergency instructions when flying is to place the oxygen mask on your face first, before assisting others ~ because if you don’t, you’ll be of no use to others around you who might need your help. Don’t you think this is how moms should operate on a daily basis ~ not just when flying?

As moms, we often forget to take care of our own needs first because we’re afraid we’ll be labeled as selfish. But if you continually tend to others without regard for yourself, then where do you end up? You may very well land in a sea of exhaustion and negativity, with no identity. Not only is this self-destructive, but it may not be setting a positive example for your children.

Honor yourself by paying attention to your own needs first ~ whether it’s your body, mind or soul. Are you wondering how to weave this into your already busy mom schedule? It’s really not that difficult. By taking action with the following small steps, you will be closer to living a life filled with peace and satisfaction!

Your Body: Being mindful of your own physical needs is a priority because it gives you the energy to take care of others. Add foods to your diet that increase your metabolism, rather than reaching for something quick that will slow you down. There are many great-tasting foods that naturally boost your metabolism ~ fiber-rich cereal with blueberries, turkey on whole grain bread with spinach and tomato and fish with omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon. By incorporating fruits, vegetables, fiber and protein into your diet, you will notice a spike in your energy level. And don’t forget to drink plenty of water ~ by drinking at least 64 oz. of water daily, you stay hydrated and invigorated!

Your Mind: Having a best friend to discuss your thoughts with is a great stress-reliever. But have you ever considered writing down your thoughts in a journal? Journaling is an incredible tool for easing worry and anxiety, for identifying your hopes and fears and for allowing your creative self to develop. Choose a time when you have 15 minutes to yourself, and make it a priority to jot down your feelings in a pretty notebook or diary. You’ll be amazed at how you feel after you release your emotions on paper!

Your Soul: Do you have nagging thoughts about the past or the future? Sometimes we need to simply remove negative thoughts from our minds and replace them with happy emotions by living in the present. The more we train our brain to be grateful for each moment we are alive, it strengthens our soul by allowing us to be more open to the love from others and to appreciate the beauty of life!

So, put on that oxygen mask, and take care of yourself first! Not only will you be amazed with your increased energy, enhanced creativity and new outlook on life, but your loved ones will, too!
